Myanmar/Burma-A History
The first people of Burma were called the Mon. They shared cultures with Khmer.(Cambodia) In 1044, Burman ruler Anawratha united Burma & Khmer and founded a kingdom that lasted nearly 250 years. The last kingdom was ruled by Alaungpaya.
In the 19th century, Great Britian defeated Myanmar in 3 different wars! Myanmar's last kingdom collasped after the wars. Myanmar was a separate British Colony in 1937. Japan invaded 5 years later and occupied it until the final year of WWII. Burma became an independant nation on January 4, 1948. In March, 1962, General Ne Win took power in a millitary group and established policies called "The Burmese way to Socialism". In 1988, Ne Win resigned, and the millitary killed 3,000 demonstraters. The millitary led State Law and Order Restoration Council (SLORC) and became the nations governing body.
